Domestic worker induction

The goal of this induction program is to ensure that the domestic worker feel confident, informed, and prepared for their role. It's also an opportunity to establish clear expectations and standards, and to ensure that the worker understands their rights, roles and responsibilities.

Overview of the Domestic Worker Role

This, is person employed full time or party time on a private household to perform duties outlined by the employer that are home based. These includes: cleaning, cooking, laundry, child care, school meals. The duties can extend to gardening, driving family, caregiving for the elderly, sick or disabled people.

Domestic working and Responsibilities

• Cleaning and Housekeeping: Domestic workers are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the home. This includes sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, washing dishes, laundry, and cleaning bathrooms.
• Cooking and Meal Preparation: Depending on the agreement, as domestic worker may also be responsible for preparing meals for the household. This includes planning meals, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning up after meals.
• Childcare: If there are children in the household, domestic workers may also be responsible for taking care of them. This includes feeding, bathing, changing diapers, and engaging in educational and recreational activities at times help with home work
Elderlycare: In some cases, domestic workers may also be tasked with taking care of elderly members of the household. This includes assisting with personal care, administering medication, and providing companionship.
• Running Errands: Domestic workers may also be asked to run errands for the household. This could include grocery shopping, picking up dry cleaning, or taking children to school or activities.
• Home Management: Some domestic workers may also be responsible for managing the home. This could include scheduling repairs or maintenance, managing other household staff, or paying bills.
• Pet Care: If the household has pets, the domestic worker may also be responsible for their care. This includes feeding, walking, grooming, and taking them to the vet.
• Respect and Confidentiality: Domestic workers are expected to respect the privacy of the household and maintain confidentiality about the family's personal affairs.
• Health and Safety: Domestic workers should also ensure the health and safety of the household. This includes following safe cleaning practices, reporting any safety hazards, and in some cases, providing first aid.
• Professionalism: Domestic workers should maintain a professional demeanour, be punctual, and communicate effectively with their employers

Code of Conduct and Ethics

• Respect and Dignity: Domestic workers should treat all members of the household with respect and dignity, regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or social status. They should also expect to be treated with respect and dignity in return.
• Honesty and Integrity: Domestic workers should always be honest and transparent in their dealings with their employers. They should not steal, lie, or engage in any fraudulent activities.
• Professionalism: Domestic workers should carry out their duties in a professional manner. They should be punctual, reliable, and efficient. They should also dress appropriately and maintain a neat and clean appearance.
• Confidentiality: Domestic workers should respect the privacy of their employers and their households. They should not disclose any personal or confidential information about their employers or their households to third parties without their employers' consent. At no time you should interfere with your employer’s conversation uninvited. Also give your employers privacy. Never share the space with them example: lounge area, dining area and many other areas uninvited.
• Compliance with rules and Regulations: Domestic workers should comply with all applicable rules and regulations of the household put in place. Report any damages or incidents before the end of your shift.
• Non-Discrimination: Domestic workers should not discriminate against their employers or other members of the household on the basis of age, gender, race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
• Non-Violence: Domestic workers should not engage in any form of violence or abuse, whether physical, verbal, or psychological, against their employers or other members of the household.
• Substance Abuse: Domestic workers should not use or be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol while on duty.
• Care and Responsibility: Domestic workers should take care of the property and belongings of their employers. They should also be responsible for their own actions and decisions.
• Communication: Domestic workers should communicate effectively and respectfully with their employers and other members of the household. They should listen to instructions and feedback, and they should express their own concerns and suggestions in a constructive manner.
• Continuous Learning: Domestic workers should strive to improve their skills and knowledge through continuous learning and professional development.
• Health and Safety: Domestic workers should follow all health and safety guidelines to ensure their own well-being and that of the household.
• Fair Treatment: Domestic workers should expect fair treatment from their employers, including fair pay, reasonable working hours, and adequate rest and leave periods.

Dress Code and Personal Appearance

A domestic worker's dress code and personal appearance should be professional, clean, and appropriate for the tasks they are performing.
• Clothing: Domestic workers should wear comfortable, practical clothing that allows them to perform their duties efficiently. This could include uniforms provided by the employer or their own clothing, such as t-shirts, pants, or skirts. Clothes should be clean and in good condition. Avoid wearing revealing or overly casual clothing like shorts, tank tops, or flip-flops. Avoid wearing sleep wear outside your room if you are a sleep in domestic worker
Foot Wear: Shoes should be comfortable and safe, especially if the worker is on their feet for long periods or doing heavy lifting. Closed-toe shoes are often the best choice.
• Personal Hygiene: Good personal hygiene is essential. This includes regular bathing, use of deodorant, and clean, neat hair. Nails should be kept short and clean to avoid scratching surfaces or spreading germs. Hair should be kept neat and tidy. If it's long, it should be tied back to prevent it from falling into food or getting caught in equipment.
• Jewellery and Accessories: Jewellery should be kept to a minimum to avoid accidents or damage. Avoid wearing dangling earrings, bracelets, or necklaces that could get caught in equipment.
• Tattoos and Piercings: While these are personal choices, they should be kept discreet and professional. Some employers may request that tattoos be covered and excessive piercings removed during work hours.
• Uniforms: If a uniform is provided, it should be worn correctly and kept clean and in good condition.
Remember, the key is to present a professional image while being able to perform duties safely and effectively. The specific dress code may vary depending on the employer's preferences and the nature of the work.

Leave and Absence Policies

• Annual Leave: Domestic workers are typically entitled to a certain number of paid leave days per year. This can range from 10 to 30 days, depending on the agreement in terms of the employment contract.
• Sick Leave: Domestic workers should be allowed to take time off if they are ill. The number of paid sick days can vary, but it's typically around 10 days per year. Some employers may require a medical certificate for absences longer than a certain period.
• Maternity Leave: female domestic workers are entitled to maternity leave. The length of this leave can vary, but it's typically around 12 weeks.
• Absences: Unexplained or unauthorized absences can be grounds for disciplinary action or even dismissal. However, employers should have a clear policy in place and should communicate this policy to the worker.
• Emergency Leave: Some employers may offer emergency leave for situations like a death in the family or a personal crisis. This is typically unpaid, but it can be a valuable benefit for workers. Absenteeism without and valid cause or reason it is not allowed
NB: all planned leave should be discussed with your employer and should suit the employer’s schedule. Report and delays that might happen or that might cause you to be late at work or cause you to be absent.
